Small is Beautiful! - Why it is important to support our local businesses.

Throughout the Triad area, there are thousands of small local businesses that help shape the quality of our everyday life. We pass by their offices and storefronts everywhere we go. They provide jobs for our neighbors; generate tax revenue for our towns and are truly committed to supporting myriad community services and charities. In fact, there are an increasing number of new businesses starting every year providing more convenience and greater competition which brings better service and lower prices as well as helping build a better economic base for our local towns to sustain positive growth.

Additional benefits of a strong local business base include greater diversity and choice and often enhance innovation. They create more meaningful employment. Local businesses tend to also make purchases from local vendors and suppliers. With more concerns about local environmental issues, there is no better way to maximize resources than to have a strong local merchant mix.

I do not see major national ‘big box’ retailers or the ability to make more purchases online using the Internet as a threat to local business either. Many of us make purchases of products and services based on pricing and availability and as smart consumers; we should always look for the best deal!

In these dynamic economic times, often small businesses can excel due to their ability to know their customer’s needs at the moment and promptly respond by making the necessary changes in their choice of vendors and service delivery to meet these customer needs.

Think about what your definition of great customer service is. As consumers, we want convenience, friendly and knowledgeable assistance but we also appreciate accountability after the purchase is made. We want to be confident in our decisions and not second guess ourselves that we made a hasty purchase decision or impulse buy. With the emphasis on referral and repeat business, your local business has more at stake to provide customer satisfaction including peace of mind.

Therefore, maybe the next time you are just ‘driving by’ the same shop, store, or business that you pass everyday, you will consider stopping in and ‘taking a look’. That is all a professional local merchant can ask and you might even find what you are looking for.
